The Golden State Valkyries secured a 64-55 victory over the Atlanta Dream on Monday night in San Francisco, placing them one win away from a WNBA title in their second season as a franchise. The decisive factor was a stifling defensive performance that limited the Dream to a 29.2% field goal percentage, the fourth lowest mark in any WNBA Finals game.

Kiah Stokes anchored the effort by forcing 17 turnovers, which the Valkyries converted into 21 points. She also held Atlanta to just 18 points in the paint. The defensive intensity was evident throughout the contest, with Golden State establishing a lead of 16 points late in the fourth quarter.

Stokes recorded her third consecutive game with at least three blocks, a streak that matches Lisa Leslie for the longest in a single season of WNBA playoff history. Her presence on the floor has been decisive against the Dream's star, Angel Reese. Reese, who scored 51 points in the previous two games, managed only 7 on Monday, marking the second time in her career she has been held to single digits in consecutive contests.

Offensively, Stokes contributed 13 points, a personal season high, and hit three 3-pointers. The total of 64 points for Golden State is the fewest for a team winning a Finals game since 2005. The combined 119 points scored by both teams represent the fifth lowest total in Finals history.

Dream coach Karl Smesko acknowledged the difficulty of guarding Stokes, citing her length and instincts. He stated the team needs to keep her moving to prevent her from packing the paint, while giving her credit for her performance. Golden State coach Natalie Nakase said she would name Stokes the MVP if the team wins the title, noting the fans at Ballhalla were chanting the accolade during the postgame interview.

Stokes, a three-time WNBA and three-time NCAA champion, is in her first season with Golden State after playing for New York and Las Vegas. She noted that hearing 18,000 fans appreciate her work makes her feel valued. She emphasized the team's focus on winning the next game to avoid a return to San Francisco.

The Valkyries have the opportunity to clinch the championship with a win on Thursday at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. If the series goes to a seventh game, it will be played on Saturday back at Chase Center. The team has indicated it will treat the next game with a do or die mentality regardless of the location.
