The Milwaukee Brewers face a decisive opportunity on October 27 to end their first World Series appearance with a 4-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
A win in Game 4 would grant the Brewers their first franchise title. It would also place them in rare company alongside the 1976 Cincinnati Reds as the only teams to sweep both the League Championship Series and the World Series.
Twenty-one World Series sweeps have occurred in MLB history. The American League accounts for 13 of those, while the National League has eight. The New York Yankees delivered eight of the 13 American League sweeps.
In the National League, the New York/San Francisco Giants hold three sweeps and the Cincinnati Reds hold two. The most recent sweep occurred in 2012 when the San Francisco Giants defeated the Detroit Tigers.
The Brewers would become the 22nd team to achieve a sweep if they win tonight. Their last championship drought dates back to their inaugural season in 1969. The Rays have not won a World Series in franchise history.
The 2012 San Francisco Giants remain the most recent team to sweep the World Series. Before them, the Boston Red Sox swept the Colorado Rockies in 2007 and the St. Louis Cardinals in 2004. The Cincinnati Reds swept the New York Yankees in 1976.
