Nick Mohammed has announced he will step into the lead role in The Traitors: Acts of Betrayal, a West End production currently starring Claudia Winkleman. Rehearsals for the show are scheduled to begin in January, with previews opening in June at the Gillian Lynne Theatre. This move marks a return to the stage for the 46-year-old performer, whose career has expanded from local magic clubs in Leeds to international television and film.

Mohammed’s recent visibility was bolstered by his appearance on The Celebrity Traitors. He reached the final of the 2025 series, which drew an average of 11.1 million viewers. That figure made it the largest live audience for a single television program in the UK that year. The exposure has shifted the volume of work available to him. He now hosts the Olivier Awards and describes a clear divide in the offers he receives based on his participation in that reality show.

His path to the stage began with a Paul Daniels magic set he received as a child in Leeds. He joined a local magic club and started performing close-up card tricks at weddings and hotels at age 16. That early work funded his college education. He also performed at the 2012 wedding of his friend, actor Simon Bird. He later developed the character of Mr. Swallow, a magician, while pursuing a PhD in seismology. He performed with the Cambridge Footlights and took the act to the Edinburgh Fringe annually before expanding it into a full-hour show.

On screen, Mohammed’s credits include the 2016 films Bridget Jones's Baby and Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie. He appeared in the 2025 film Deep Cover alongside Bryce Dallas Howard and Orlando Bloom. His television work includes Fresh Meat, Stath Lets Flats, Inside No. 9, Taskmaster, Slow Horses, and Last One Laughing U.K. His profile rose significantly with the Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso, for which he received two Emmy nominations. He initially declined the role of Nate Shelley to focus on his own series, Intelligence, but accepted after showrunner Bill Lawrence encouraged him to proceed.

After the second season of Ted Lasso, Mohammed took the Mr. Swallow act to New York. He sold out a 1,200-seat town hall venue, with an audience composed largely of fans of the television show who had not previously seen his magic performance. He attributes his ability to manage this rapid rise to the gradual nature of his career progression. He noted that the industry prepares performers for failure but offers little guidance on handling global success.

Currently, Mohammed is filming Sky’s legal thriller War, which has been ordered for two seasons. The series is led by Dominic West and Sienna Miller. Mohammed plays Michael, a lawyer characterized as an arrogant loner. His role is smaller in the first season and expands in the second, which is already completed. He also has a Mr. Swallow special in distribution with Universal and is developing projects with the BBC, Channel 4, and Apple. The second series of The Celebrity Traitors is set to conclude with its finale this Friday.

Mohammed describes himself as someone who is uneasy about being praised for basic professionalism. He states that he is not without ego and views ambition and confidence as useful traits. His wife, a music teacher, helps keep his perspective, often reminding him that his professional frustrations are first-world problems. He will continue to perform as Mr. Swallow for any live engagements, maintaining the persona he built from his early days performing at Leeds events.
