Anthropic disclosed more than $80.7bn in losses for the first half of 2026 as it released details for its upcoming US stock market listing.

The company, which created the AI chatbot Claude, generated $16.3bn in revenue during that same period. It has not yet determined the number of shares to be released or the specific price range. Analysts expect the valuation to exceed the $1.8 trillion initial mark set by SpaceX, the largest stock listing of the summer.

Dario Amodei, his sister Daniela Amodei, and five other co-founders established the firm five years ago. Anthropic announced its intention to go public in June. Its main rival, OpenAI, also plans a listing, with sources indicating that will occur early next year.

In its filings, the company stated that policymakers, regulators, and internal researchers have raised concerns about AI safety. It warned that advanced systems could pose catastrophic or existential risks to humanity if they lack appropriate safeguards, oversight, and security. The documents noted these dangers increase if systems are misused, replicated, weaponised, or granted a high degree of autonomy.

Following the decision to go public, a wave of cyber-security breaches involved the companies' autonomous AI agents. Current and former staff from both firms have publicly warned that AI technology is developing faster than the ability to protect humanity from future harms. Anthropic reiterated its promise to develop beneficial AI while explicitly warning investors of these dangers.

The company explained its financial strategy by noting it often makes forward investments that may appear irresponsibly large at first glance. It stated, "In general, we will aim to be bold but sane, and to win trust with a track record of successful bets." Anthropic will list on the Nasdaq under the symbol ANT, becoming the first pure-play AI company to go public. This move arrives as the tech sector has poured more than $1 trillion into AI infrastructure and data centres over the last year.
