Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced on Wednesday afternoon that YouTube Premium and YouTube Music now have more than 150 million subscribers. This figure marks a substantial increase from the 125 million users the company reported for these two services last year. The company did not provide a separate breakdown for individual service counts in its latest disclosure.

The platform’s financial performance also strengthened during the period. YouTube ad sales reached over $11.2 billion in the third quarter. This amount represents an increase from $10.3 billion in the same quarter of the previous year and aligns with the revenue reported in the second quarter.

Philipp Schindler, Google’s chief business officer, provided context on the platform's activity during the earnings call. He stated that more than 20 million videos are uploaded to YouTube every day. Schindler described the business model as a cycle involving creators, viewers, and advertisers. He noted that the company is working to reduce friction for all three groups.

Schindler detailed specific tools introduced to support this model. For creators, the company added generative AI features to YouTube Studio and a conversational editing assistant for Shorts and YouTube Create. He explained, “We are making creation easier with new generative AI tools in YouTube Studio, plus a conversational editing assistant in Shorts and YouTube Create.”

Regarding viewer engagement, Schindler highlighted the “Made on YouTube” initiative. This program allows creators to organize shorts into seasons and episodes. He said, “Sequential playback makes it seamless for viewers to discover new shorts and keep watching.” This structure aims to encourage longer viewing sessions through structured series.

Monetization remains a key focus for the platform. Schindler reported that Living Room devices accounted for more than one-third of total YouTube ad revenues in the third quarter. He added that small and medium advertisers are increasingly using demand gen campaigns to drive direct response. This trend suggests a shift in how smaller businesses approach video advertising.

On the subscription side, Schindler emphasized the variety of options available to users. He said, “With Premium and Premium Light, viewers have choice.” He argued that the growth in paid subscriptions supports the creator ecosystem and drives the platform forward. The milestone positions YouTube as a major player in both video advertising and subscription services.
