Google AI Mode Deflects Direct Answers on Recent Presidential Election Winners
Users report that the system cites the Federal Election Commission for 2020 and 2024 results while providing straightforward names for older contests.

Google’s AI Mode often avoids naming the winners of the 2020 and 2024 U.S. presidential elections, instead directing users to outside sources for official data. When asked on October 28, 2026, who won the 2020 race, the tool responded by recommending that users consult the official report compiled by the Federal Election Commission. The same indirect approach occurred when the system was queried about the 2024 result, with the AI again pointing users to the FEC for final certification details.
The behavior is not universal across all election cycles. The AI provided detailed and correct names for the winners of every other presidential election from 2000 through 2016. However, the 2012 election received a slightly different treatment, with the system linking to The American Presidency Project’s 2012 Data Center rather than stating the winner directly. This inconsistency has drawn attention from users and tech observers who note the specific omission of the two most recent contests.
Testing by multiple individuals suggests the responses may vary by user account. One Ars Technica staffer reported receiving immediate, direct answers for the 2016 and 2024 elections, while queries about earlier years yielded links to outside data. Other testers found that the system defaulted to the FEC citation for the 2020 and 2024 cycles more frequently. The specific election cycles that triggered an indirect response appeared to differ between individual users.
The Federal Election Commission is the agency responsible for compiling official election statistics, including electoral college breakdowns and popular vote counts. Google’s AI Mode has not issued a formal explanation for why it defers to the FEC for recent results while answering older queries directly. The tool continues to function as a search assistant, pulling from various data sources to construct its responses.
Users can replicate the behavior by asking the AI Mode interface for the winner of a specific presidential election. The system’s output depends on the specific prompt and potentially the user's browsing history or account settings. As of October 28, 2026, no update to the AI’s response logic has been announced by Google.
