F-16 intercepts civilian plane near Mar-a-Lago with 'headbutt maneuver'
A pilot violated a Temporary Flight Restriction on Saturday while President Trump voted in West Palm Beach, leading to a standard close-proximity interception by NORAD.

A civilian aircraft entered restricted airspace near President Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, on Saturday, prompting a U.S. military jet to perform a close-proximity maneuver to secure compliance. The incident occurred at approximately 12:20 p.m. ET, during a day when the President was in West Palm Beach to cast an early ballot for the midterm elections.
North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, deployed an F-16 fighter jet to the scene. The military aircraft flew directly in front of the civilian plane in a tactic known as a "headbutt maneuver." NORAD officials described the action as a standard procedure used to gain the attention of a pilot who has entered a protected zone.
The close approach allowed the F-16 to establish communication with the pilot. The pilot then steered the aircraft out of the restricted area in accordance with flight instructions. NORAD noted that the plane had violated a Temporary Flight Restriction, or TFR. The command stated that the pilot could face federal authorities upon landing and remain subject to enforcement action.
The Federal Aviation Administration issues TFRs for various reasons, including large sporting events, extreme weather, and political rallies. High-profile political figures, particularly the president, frequently trigger these restrictions. The FAA disseminates details about these zones through Notices to Airmen, or NOTAMs, which pilots are encouraged to monitor regularly to avoid violations.
President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were observed at a West Palm Beach polling station on Saturday afternoon. The President cast his ballot ahead of next week's midterm elections. When asked if he voted along party lines, Trump replied, "Very much so." He subsequently traveled to Georgia for a campaign rally.
Recent campaign appearances by the President have led to multiple similar interceptions. Earlier this month, NORAD reported that F-16s intercepted a plane over Clemson, South Carolina, where Trump supported Darline Graham's Senate campaign. Days before that incident, the command reported a similar interception over Cincinnati, Ohio, following another presidential appearance.
