Kylian Mbappe scored twice to lead Real Madrid to a 2-1 victory over Barcelona at Camp Nou on Sunday night, halting the Catalan club's nine-game winning streak in La Liga.
The result marks the first league defeat for Barcelona this season. A win for the hosts would have broken the Spanish top-flight record for the best start, a mark set by Real Madrid during the 1968-69 campaign. Instead, the visitors took all three points in a match that ended Barcelona's perfect record in the domestic league.
Mbappe's two goals lifted his personal tally to 100 for Real Madrid across all competitions. The French forward joined the club from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024. He also extended his season total to 14 goals, securing his position as the second-highest scorer in La Liga. The milestone arrived one day before the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London, where Mbappe is considered a leading candidate for the 2025-26 award.
The win improved Real Madrid's standing in the all-time Clasico record. The club now holds 107 victories against Barcelona's 106. This marks a shift in the head-to-head history after Barcelona held the lead for years. It also represented a second consecutive loss for Hansi Flick's Barcelona, following their recent defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
Real Madrid sit third in the La Liga table with 24 points after 10 matches. They trail Barcelona by three points. Atletico Madrid occupy second place with 25 points. The team has won its last five matches, including three in the domestic league and two in Europe. This run follows earlier losses to Real Betis and Atletico Madrid last month.
Jose Mourinho, who returned to the club after a 13-year absence, celebrated the win with a knee slide. He noted that the performance was necessary to compete for the title. 'If we win today but lose at El Sardinero, it counts for nothing, because Madrid isn't playing to win at the Camp Nou,' Mourinho said. 'They're playing to win the championship.'
The 63-year-old manager has not won a league title since 2014-15 with Chelsea. His previous stint at Real Madrid produced three trophies, including a record-breaking La Liga championship. The squad now enters the next match with momentum and a renewed sense of direction after a season that began with uncertainty.
