Chili's Grill & Bar in Forest City, North Carolina, resumed operations on Friday, Oct. 29, following a health inspection that paused its food service permit. The restart comes after three customers and two employees suffered chemical burns from margaritas prepared with a granulated degreasing agent.

The ForestHills Health District suspended the permit after learning of the incident on Thursday, Oct. 28. Health officials reported that the three customers experienced discomfort and chemical burns in and around their mouths. Two restaurant employees who tasted the drinks reported similar symptoms. The specific medical status of the five individuals was not immediately disclosed by officials.

The error occurred on the morning of Monday, Oct. 26. A contracted worker power washing the exterior of the restaurant placed a granulated degreaser into an unlabeled container. This container was moved inside and left in the bar area. On Thursday morning, an employee preparing the bar for lunch service identified the unlabeled container as sugar. The employee used the substance to set up the margarita station.

Upon receiving the report, health officials instructed staff to wash, rinse, and sanitize all affected food preparation areas and equipment. The district's Environmental Health Specialists reviewed the site and reinstated the permit on Friday. Officials determined the restaurant could safely resume serving food.

Chili's Grill & Bar acknowledged the event in a written statement. The company described the event as an isolated incident that injured two guests and two team members. The restaurant noted that its team took immediate steps to support those affected and prevent additional injuries. The chain stated it is actively investigating the circumstances.

The company emphasized that the health and well-being of guests and team members remain its top priority. The incident occurred at the specific Forest City location, which is part of the larger national chain. No other locations were reported to be affected by the specific chemical mix-up.
